Today I mailed off my letter of resignation.
I have been inactive since I was 18, and prior to that only attended meetings because my mother and her husband (not my biological father) were members. The sexual abuse from him started when I was around 8 and continued until I was about 15. When I told a church friend about what was going on, and she told our bishop, who did the right thing and informed the police, and helped my mother and I get out of a bad situation. Her husband was incarcerated and I had to live with the stigma of being "the girl who was raped" until I was 18 because my mother forced me to continue to go to church. The bishop who helped us later stepped down and became inactive himself (I hope he and his family got out!)

Once I went to college I refused to be involved with the church in any way, despite my mother constantly sending the mormon brigade to my apartment. I confronted her when I turned 21 and told her I wanted nothing to do with the church and if she wanted to continue to have a relationship with me she would stop trying to convince me to be active. The church dropped out of me life for several years at that point.

When I was 26 I got a card in the mail on my birthday from some home teachers. At this point I was livid. I had lived in peace for so long, I had recently married a wonderful Atheist/Episcopalian and we were happy. I called my mom and she denied any interaction concerning giving our information to the local church. One day I was hanging out laundry in the yard when a car pulled into the drive way it was a pair of elderly missionaries who were inquiring about me. I don't know what my partner told them, but they left quickly and did not seemed pleased.

Ever since then I have received several cards, letters, and newsletters trying to convince me to become part of the church again. I have trashed them all. My partner suggested we get a lawyer to send a cease and desist letter, and perhaps sue for harassment. I have been lurking and reading this forum for some time, and read up on resigning from the church, so today I sent the letter off.

If they continue to bother me I do believe I will show the locals a copy of the letter and then sic a lawyer on them.

It feels good to see the mormon free light at the end of the tunnel!

I have recently experienced freedom like I have never experienced before.
In my case it had to do with letting go of painful things from the past.
Freedom is so awesome.
It's good to hear that you are "almost free."
Welcome to the board.

Hi, Welcome!
If you have sent your resignation in, then there will be an end to it all and it is extremely unlikely you will have any need for any lawyer. Email is always best

To: Confidential Records:
Subject: Resignation of membership in LDS church

My full name is ______; my date of birth is ____________ . [I was baptized on ___(date). My membership number is ______.]
My residence address is _______ [in the ________ ward/branch].

I hereby resign my membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, effective immediately, and request you to remove my name permanently from your membership records. I wish no further contact from representatives of your church except to confirm that my name has been removed from your records. I expect to receive that confirmation within a reasonably short time.

2 to 6 weeks should see it over :)

Congratulations :)

Wow, yes! Graduation, what an important word... ... estone-for

There are way too many parallels between Mormonism and these tragic Southern Utah FLDS towns. Did you know some of these places have just gotten a public library for the first time?
