Hello, I am not a Mormon, ( never have been) but my wife became one about ten years ago. I've noticed that every year, she receives a report from a big shot in the church regarding her annual $$$ amount that she donates. Every year the amount seems to inch up a little more . I have nothing to do with Mormonism, but just who decides how much is to be donated each year ?
I personally find this aspect to be very much like Scientology and their heavy- handed methods. I have attempted discussing this either my wife several times over the past few years, but she gets all emotional and I end up feeling like a heel each time. She uses her own personal money, but the whole thing just smacks me as being robbery.
I was considering asking her in January, right after getting her donation page if this is what Mormons believe is the current cost of maintaining a relationship with God.
There are many other charities / efforts that also need contributions in the world, what makes Mormonism so crystal clear, that so much is given to them ?

The amount given to the Church is 10% of your gross income. So if your income goes up, so will your tithing amount.

Then once per month, you're supposed to give the cost of two meals towards the welfare program, which would also go up as the price of food goes up.

Hey Mercury7, Rainfeather just listed the monetary requirements to be "in good standing." which is just the tip of the cost iceberg when you consider the time and energy involved in members "callings."

Yep, and I didn't include any other donations that a person might want to make on their own, apart from the required ones.

Wow, I thank you all so much for your replies. It seems that with each new incident, or story I hear about Mormon beliefs it's much like an iceberg. So much more is under the surface that we cannot see

mercury7.

My advice: Ask your wife if she is a seeker of truth? If she says "No" then perhaps Mormonism is where she wants to be. On the other hand, if truth means anything to her, then, ask her if she would be willing to go through a Family Home Evening lesson entitled "Am I a Seeker of Truth." link: http://richkelsey.org/lds_family_home_evening.html

If you read this lesson to her just as it is written it should be an eye-opening experience for her; &, you may even learn something.

Welcome to the board.

Hi Mercury7,

Welcome.

This site has a nice overview of Tithing as it relates to Mormons.
