An interesting little adminny/ethical-ly conundrum for you to have a tussle with. Possibly most of interest to anyone who's ever been a bishop.

A well-meaning individual who wasn't actually a member of TSSC (& had never been a member) died recently and left about £10,000 (not sure how much that is in dollars but will be more) in her will to 'the church'. Apparently, local missionaries had been very helpful towards her, sorting out practical tasks, doing her gardening etc. In the course of time, a cheque to the amount of the bequest made out to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints arrived on the local bishop's desk. The bishop in question's part of a local 'dynasty' - his Mum's Stake Primary President, 1 sister's Relief Society President, another sister's Young Women's President, bishop's wife's counsellor to Relief Society President. Looks like he's set a hare running as he's discussed the bequest with the family who're telling him to do different things & disagreeing as to the way forward with spending the cash. At this stage, only the family know about the money.

Wanting to keep the cash local, he went back to the executors of the person's will and asked them to change the payee on the cheque to the local church district. They've done this so now the decision is to be made as to how to spend the cash. He's told the family that he'll decide what to do with it but the sisters are getting very vocal and wanting a democratic (ha ha - the irony) decision involving all the congregation members.

What should the bishop do? :angelic-cyan:

He could take the $ and run, which could be interesting. Or he could actually use his female leaders to help decide where best to use this donation to help out on a local level...not Salt Lake, Money going there seems to get sucked into an huge non transparent black hole, never to be seen again.

Nice to see you here again Scouser. Your absence was duly noted over time. Keep us posted as to the actual resolution of this situation.

Haha - he'd already worked out that the cash could end up in Salt Lake which is why the cheque went back to be changed & made out to the local congregation.

He was trying to tell the family to butt out - as the bishop, it was down to him to decide how the cash was spent, nothing to do with anyone else, irrespective of whether they had a fancy title or not. He'd consider consulting with his counsellors & doing a bit of praying about it but, no way was anything remotely democratic going to come off. Apparently, his family knew about it before his counsellors & it stirred up quite a heated debate. I'm amazed the women had the 'cheek' to argue back lol. Obvs don't know their proper place........

Doubt I'll get to find out how it was decided who should be in on the decision & where the cash eventually ended up. Interesting little conundrum though. What would the official church line be on something like this?
